Welcome to HotelGuide.Networks' directory of hotels and hotel reviews for Warsaw, Poland!
Nearly destroyed during darkest hours of World War II, Warsaw -- political center of Poland since 1611 -- reflects a Western and Eastern Europe cultural crossover, with historic buildings, palaces, and churches painstakingly reconstructed brick by brick from photos, paintings, and memories. Bleak post-war architecture and more modern skyscrapers mix with Warsaw relics, putting the historic city center on the World Heritage List. Prominent among attractions including churches, monasteries, and museums is the Palace of Arts and Culture near old town, symbolic of once-prevailing communism and likened in appearance to a wedding cake. Of some five million travelers from outside Poland lodging in Warsaw each year, most are from the former Soviet Union and Germany, drawn by the Polish city’s role as the national academic, commercial, and political capital. Leisure oriented Western Europeans and visitors from abroad often pursue the city’s many theater, book, jazz and classical music festivals, pumping more than a billion dollars annually into Warsaw’s economy. Throughout the city are plaques detailing massacres of Poles by the Nazis, many reflecting tortured days of April, 1943 when forces within the Jewish ghetto rose up against Hitler only to be brutally and repeatedly beaten back until summer, 1944 when the Warsaw uprising ended. Warsaw lodging includes more than 30 hotels, some with chain names familiar to westerners and mostly in the city center, accommodating up to 16,500 guests. Although more hotels are cropping up near main roads linking to other regions, Warsaw’s two- or three-star facilities are in short supply.
